Artist Inspiration:
Over the Summer I Visited The Museum of Modern Art in New York. A piece by Kamala Ibrahim Ishag really caught my eye. The piece is an Untitled piece created between 1980 and 1990 with oil on canvas. The painting depicts altered consciousness. Contorted faces and bodies of women are painted around the canvas in warm, earthy tones. Kamala Ibrahim Ishag also took inspiration from the study of zar, which is a womans spirit possession cult in central Sudan, Her painting suggests the trances the women would be placed in due to the spirit of Zar during ritual ceremonies.
Planning:
It took me a while to find inspiration for this project. But going to the Museum Of Modern art really helped inspire me.
Experimentation:
I began this piece with a 1 ft by 2 ft canvas I had previously built last school year. I placed a variety of colors onto the canvas that I then blended out with my fingers. When that dried I decided that I didn't like the size and the shape of the canvas I had. I went out and purchased a 2 ft by 2 ft canvas instead because it was more cohesive with my vision.
Process:
I used a 2ft x 2ft canvas for this piece. I started off by giving the background of the canvas a wash of a burnt sienna acrylic paint so I didn't have to start off with just a stark white background.
Next, I created a 4x4 grid of the canvass with each square being 5in by 5in as a guideline for the figures I was going to be painting. Then I selected 8 portraits of myself. In each portrait of myself, I am portraying a range of emotions. I began painting each portrait. The ones on the upper right corner are more neutral, the portraits on the lower left hand corner use a lot of red tones and the ones in the upper left hand corner use more blue/green tones. Once I had all the portraits laid out how I liked them I went back over each one with washes of brown and tan so it everything was more cohesive. Then I worked on the background. A mixture of red, blue, green, yellow, white, and sienna were placed sporadically on the canvas. When I had all the paint blended out on the canvas I went in with some water soluble oil pastels to create more texture, movement and depth further in the piece.
