Artist Inspiration:
Planning:
To begin this project, I started by thinking of a bunch of things that could have meaning or some sort of hidden meaning to me. At first, it was hard for me to kind of brainstorm a bunch of ideas. But then they came to me. My first idea was the Death's-Head moth from The Silence Of The Lambs. I knew I wanted the moth to be the centerpiece of the design so I started with figuring out how to draw that first. My second idea was a silhouette of my boyfriend and I. He means a lot to me and I wanted to think of a way to try and incorporate him into some of my work. I was thinking of leaving the silhouette part un-carved so that it would show up pitch black on the paper. My reference photo was taken outside in the moonlight so I was also trying to incorporate that into the background with various shading techniques. My last idea was inspired by a picture I took at the end of a concert at Summerfest. The picture was that of two crushed beer cans and a bottle cap on the floor under some bleachers. My idea was that one could find beauty in something considered "dirty ".
Process:
The last time I worked with carving tools and a linoleum block was back in my sixth grade art class. Other than that, I have never really worked with this medium before, so I was excited to get started on this project. I finalized my sketch and covered the back of with pencil then did a graphite transfer onto my linoleum block. I then realized that I needed to switch up the placement of they eyes. I just flipped which eye went on which side. I then began my process of carving. I started with cutting out the middle of the moth, working my way the edges of its wings. I cut out all the parts that I hadn't shaded in on the moths body. And when I was finished with that I started working on the eyes. For the eyes I cut out the parts I had shaded. From there, I was curious as to how it was looking so far so I decided to do my first practice print which did not come out too well. But I got a general idea of what It was looking like so far.

I then felt as if it was a little too plain. So i decided to add a little more texture to the background. I wasn't 100% sure with what exactly I wanted to have in the background, so I kind of just thought of it was I went along. I pushed a small carving tool with a rounded tip vertically in kind of a weaving motion, almost digging little holes/divots into the linoleum avoiding the edges of the moth. I finally stopped myself because I didn't want to overdo it. I didn't want to keep adding more and more to it because I knew that I would do too much and then mess it up.
I got out the printing ink and applied different amounts of ink on the the pallet at different times so I could determine how much ink would be ideal for producing my print. I found that taking a medium amount of ink and diluting it with a few drops of water worked best for me to create my finished product. I created about 15-20 prints before I got my best three final ones.
Critique:
Compared to Dawn Ballies work, mine is obviously not as realistic or advanced. Her's and my artwork are also very different from each others. Especially by the medium. She uses graphic design to crate her final product while I created my via block print.
Reflection:
In the end, I think my final piece turned out pretty alight. Although, I think it ended up looking pretty busy. In the future, if I were to recreate this, I Think I would have added less of the divots in the background or just get rid of them completely and have the background just be pitch black. Im glad that this project finally pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and I am excited to do more projects that will allow to me to experiment more with multiple mediums. I happy with my finished project and I am proud of myself for getting it completed.

1. Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationship between your inspiration upon your artwork
- I was able to identify the cause and effect relationships between my inspiration any my artwork through the use of the Death's-Head Moth. It was such an excellent symbol for silence. In the movie, The Silence Of The Lambs, a Death's-Head moth is found lodged in the throat of one of the killers victims.

2. What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
- The website I visited gave me some brief background information on the artist Dawn Baillie. I couldn't really find a lot of resources that had more information about her. But, from the information that I did gather, I found that she is a very well rounded person that has a lot of experience in digital art.

3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration
- I have found that people show they care in different ways. And that there are may different ways art can be perceived.
4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspiration research?
- My central idea/theme was family. Even though you may not talk all the time or be the nicest to each other, you have to be happy for the little thing that they have to offer you, whether it's something physical, or just a small moment you have shared.
5. What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the bases of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
- I Found that I couldn't find a lot of resources to get a lot of detail into my research. But the research that I did find gave me a good idea on who Dawn Baillie is and what she has accomplished in her time creating art.
